Lecture 8: Use of GIS in Fire Department

Calgary Fire Department supports the use of GIS analysis in fire event. GIS is used for risk analysis, response mapping, operational decision making, station planning, apparatus deployment and station relocation. In term of risk analysis, it analyzes the structure of risk, and documents the proximity loss, exposed buildings, and calculates the total loss of property as well as fire related deaths. To propose new fire stations, CFD uses GIS to conduct a regional locational analysis. Proposed stations are based on the primary gap between stations, potential city growth, land use, and community population density.
